State of mapping (in my opinion) and where improvements could be made
Posted by MrMap on March 20, 2024 in English (English).Greetings everyone! I have been active on OpenHistoricalMap since mid 2020 and have done a lot to contribute to the map. Countries in Europe are mapped extremely well and it is something nice to hear along with their corresponding borders. When it comes down to countries beyond Europe, East Asia and some parts of the Americas many more countries could be added to the map and I have added a few myself. In terms of where mapping could best be improved at is in Africa, Americas (beyond Canada and the US), Middle East and Oceania. If you set the slider to 2024 most of Africa, Middle East, Oceania, large parts of the Americas aren’t mapped that well.

Hi, I’ve started adding some modern countries, for now I added some borders for Asian countries and some labels for African countries.

@MrMap - Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback! I totally agree that we need better coverage at the country level, around the world. Even in Europe, there is a lot of opportunity for improvement. We’ll be putting together a more coherent content strategy to try to encourage greater coverage in the near future. Stay tuned!
p.s. the best place to keep up to date with OHM discussions is on the OHM Community Forum!

Apologies if there is something I do not yet understand, as I am very new to this project, but could modern country borders not just be taken from Open Street Map? I take it the projects are at least somewhat affiliated, given the striking similarity to the interfaces and editing process. And with OSM data being open source, I can’t see what is preventing its use for modern borders within OHM.

@Soluna7, Yes I think you could add the country borders in from OpenStreetMap if they are correct and accurate.
